Meet Aly Cohen, MD

Dr. Aly Cohen is a board-certified physician practicing in rheumatology and integrative medicine, as well as an environmental health expert in Princeton, New Jersey. When not seeing patients, Dr. Cohen is dedicated to informing as many people as possible of the lurking toxins in our lives, their impacts on health, and how to reduce exposures. Dr. Cohen can often be found educating her audience through speaker engagements and as a guest expert for news outlets and podcasts. She also is the founder of The Smart Human brand and podcast.

She lives in central New Jersey with her husband and her two sons.

Education

Dr. Cohen received her undergraduate degree at the University of Pennsylvania, where she focused her studies on medical anthropology and human evolution. She went on to medical training at Hahnemann University Hospital School of Medicine in Philadelphia, and completed her internship and residency in internal medicine at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City. Dr. Cohen continued her specialist training in rheumatology and autoimmune diseases at Montefiore Hospital/Albert Einstein University Hospital in the Bronx, New York. Dr. Cohen is currently in private practice in Princeton, New Jersey. Her practice, Integrative Rheumatology Associates P.C., founded in 2011, focuses on both traditional western medical management of rheumatologic ailments, as well as integrative options for total “wellness”, such as biofeedback, acupuncture, cognitive therapy, diet and exercise counseling, environmental toxin counseling, smoking cessation, stress management, and sleep evaluations.

Dr. Cohen is trained in medical acupuncture from the Helms Institute at UCLA and Integrative Medicine and Environmental Medicine from Dr. Andrew Weil and the Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine. In 2012, she was honored as the recipient of the Jones/Lovell Rheumatology Scholarship at the Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine in Tucson, Arizona, and she continues to work alongside Dr. Andrew Weil and his colleagues in the field of integrative medicine. Dr. Cohen regularly lectures on reducing exposure to environmental toxins, improving diet, and other integrative medicine topics and techniques to her patients, schools, summer camps, medical training programs, and the community. She is a published medical author and editor, legal medical expert, and also creates environmental health curricula for schools and physician training programs, such as the Academy of Integrative Health & Medicine, Southern California University of Health Sciences, and the Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute at the University of California, Irvine.

Why I became passionate about environmental health.

I began my journey into the world of chemicals around 2006, soon after my 4 ½ year old dog, Truxtun, became gravely ill. He suffered from autoimmune hepatitis, a condition that is unusual in dogs, and especially rare for Truxtun’s breed, Golden Retriever. His diagnosis led me to learn about plastics and synthetic rubber manufacturing plants, drinking water contaminants, and processed food chemicals and their effects on the human endocrine and immune systems.
